For those of us who grew up in the early eighties surrounded by the glamour of those supremely elegant, soft and fluid crepe de chine gowns worn by our mothers, italian designer Alberto Annibali's latest collection is a treasure trove.
Alberto's 'no-season' collection, as he likes to define it, is made up of sublimely elegant 100% italian silk crepe de chine suits which can be worn all year round. Alberto's collaboration with artist Svetlana Kuliskova brought about a marvellous new creation called Arachne, a fabric borne out of the laborious task of wrapping the chiffon by hand over the crepe de chine and then sewing it together with a specially modified machine. The end result is a stunning texture of powerful visual impact.
The collection is based on two distinct shapes. The first is a soft, and delicate shape created around a mannequin by Alberto himself using a moulage technique which results in a unique piece every time. The second is a more structured and 'box-like' shape inspired by the 70's shirt dresses which Alberto is particularly fond of.
The sharp colour palette, rust brown rust brown, brick red, caramel, purple, blue, turquoise, yellow, black and white, as colour blocks or as the basis upon which to layer the transparency of chiffon add to the strong visual impact whilst maintaining a demure chic feel.
The collection is an ensemble of modern, fresh looks brought together by the elegance of the design and the fabrics used. In our opinion Alberto's 'no season' collection should also be called 'no age' as it could be worn effortlessly by a woman in her twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties.
Alberto Annibali's collection is on show at the Spring-Up Showroom in Milan's fashion street par excellence Via Tortona 37
