THE GREEN PEBBLES GIRLS' SNEAKER CHALLENGE

Alessandra Gold Mocassin

There are some days where some of the Green Pebbles Girls need to dress up as soccer mums... yes, you can imagine the type, jeans (thank you DIESEL) , white blouse (great because you can bleach off mucky chocolate hand prints), a huge tote (to carry around an extra pair of children's clothes, wipes, plasters, disinfectant, drinks and snacks alongside your VALEXTRA Ipad case and VUITTON make up case!)  and of course sneakers.......but have you ever noticed that whilst your highest LOUBOUTIN's have never caused any blisters, your sneakers have a nasty habit of you ending up having to walk around with a plaster hanging out from the back of your heel?

So The Green Pebbles Girls set themselves a challenge:  find a pair of sneakers that were fun, easy to wear with any "soccer-mum-look" whilst allowing us to retain a fashion edge and not look frumpy,  and of course most important outrageously comfortable .... and we found them all the way in MIAMI!

ALESSANDRA GOLD's super-soft leather and patterned canvas moccasins with a memory foam insole and driving shoe bottom are exactly what we were looking for.

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous you could always opt for these super fun citric and banana versions!

WHEN LUXURY, STYLE & PASSION COLLIDE.....AN INTERVIEW WITH BABAJAAN'S SANDRA MOLEIRINHO

Babajaan Maiara (Helen) Silk Georgette Kaftan (red bahia)

Catching up with Sandra Moleirinho is somewhat of a challenge as she is constantly travelling from one country to another at the drop of a hat, as founder and creative director of luxury, swimwear, beachwear and accessories brand BABAJAAN.

Yet when we finally do, we fully comprehend that her incredibly approachable nature, her innate sense of style, her true passion for what she does, and her decision early on to give back to society make a her a true force of nature!

Sandra attributes her successful achievements, and driving Babajaan full steam ahead to greater expansion and successes despite a difficult financial climate to a strong determination, in her words "You need to believe in yourself and in your choices, however the journey is not easy and you need to be sensitive to predict obstacles and to find the solutions."

The company is  growing 'organically happily,' as Sandra points out, something Sandra believes "also evolves through connecting to people and having the right partners..., our clients are all over the world from luxury resorts to high-end boutiques, in the Caribbean, South America, USA, Europe, Japan, to the Middle East...and now we are launching the collection in Brazil which is very exciting!"

Babajaan's main markets at the moment are USA, Europe and Asia, and Sandra was pleased to report that they were  starting to have some interesting requests from South America.

Babajaan Lua Kimono (navy)

Sandra's view about luxury is that it should be timeless and she tells us about a Babajaan long kaftan that belonged to their very first collection 4 years ago " I love this piece and still wear it and I have people always asking me: Is this a new piece? Where can I find it?"

As many of the established luxury brands are now finding that their consumers, including Those from their newer markets such as Russia, China etc are returning to values such as heritage, craftsmanship, and durability, as stated by Antoine Arnault recently we ask Sandra how she believes Babajaan will fit into this ‘new vision’ of the luxury client:

We are living in a moment that we want real experiences in life and this also changes behave in fashion, people wants to purchase pieces that have integrity, a nice story and quality with the correct value.

So who is the Babajaan client, who is the woman buys Babajaan, Sandra's response is in our opinion probably one of the keys to her success "It is an interesting question, because our clients are many types of women, they all love celebrating life, love and family.... We receive many emails with images of clients wearing our collection and they share their experiences with us. We are very happy to receive these emails and that Babajaan is part of their holidays, journeys and beautiful moments; it seems our clients love the simplicity of our shapes and quality".

Indeed, we would go so far as suggesting that Sandra's vision of Babajaan is so close to what women feel and need that they welcome Babajaan into their own life making Babajaan part of their family whilst entering Babajaan's own extended family.  Brand loyalty at its very best which will in all probability be handed down from generation to generation.

Babajaan Stella Swimsuit (oyster)

Sandra's Brazilian heritage and the concept of ‘Brazilian weekend’, as she once described it,  filters through the Babajaan collection, highlighting how important Sandra's heritage is to her:  As a young girl I used to spend almost of my weekends at our beach house, and it is true those weekends were amazing, we were always going to the beach, we were windsurfing, sailing; the swimwear becomes such an important part of your wardrobe because you wear it all the time, it becomes your daywear

Feeling good, comfortable and easy to wear are all musts for Sandra and this is translated into a collection where the Brazilian tradition that your Swimwear becomes becomes your daywear is clear through the functionality and practicality which are always considered when producing a Babajaan collection.

A rather refreshing concept for those of us who grew up with the mantra 'no pain, no gain'!

Yet, Sandra readily admits that there has been some influence from Europe where she has now worked and lived in  for over 10 years:  "My core inspiration comes from Brazil, my lifestyle and my connection with nature, but since I moved to Europe 15 years ago, I must say that our pieces have the European quality, finishing and details, living in Europe made my attention to details even more accurate."

Babajaan Liza Bikini (nude)

Through Babajaan Sandra is also able to give back to society through charities that benefit directly from the manufacture and the sale of the Babajaan Collection.  We ask Sandra to tell us more about this:

"We decided to manufacture Babajaan collection in India, Brazil, Ecuador and other countries for their expertise and tradition, best in their art such as embroidery work in India, special weaves and handmade techniques for the Panama Hats in Ecuador and Brazil for the great swimwear fabrics and manufactures.

The project involves the countries were we manufacture the Babajaan collection as the core of it is to give something back to each community.

Each Babajaan piece sold will help children organizations in these countries, helping children with better opportunities in life such food, guidance and study. It is important that we contribute for this vision to happen. We really love this project and we are putting our hearts on it to expand it soon."

Although Babajaan started manufacturing only in Brazil famed for its luxury swimwear production,  they now also manufacture part of their collection in Italy too, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship in both countries.

For those of you who like the Green Pebbles Girls have had the luck to see the Babajaan Cruise Collection 2012 you will be drawn into a rainbow of pastel colours combined with a ruby red and neutrals

Babajaan Jackie Bikini

The 2012 Cruise and Summer Collection Sandra explained to us were  "inspired by the Brazilian Indigenous culture and manifestation. The strong colours such as the purple, green and coral red represents their tribal dances which translates to the power of their wishes for a better blessing during the year. The embroidery details were inspired by elements from their accessories such as the “Cocar ” which represents a particular feather headdress worn as a symbol of nobility to the Indians.

Brazilian Cocars

Our inspiration was to translate this idea and culture into a long kaftans, dresses and swimwear pieces. The handmade triangle cut out elements in the bikinis represent their special outfit for hunting. The neutral colours combined with silk fringes are connected to the blessings received and to their beautiful indigenous goddesses.

Brazilian Tribal Dancer

The concept of goddess is often mentioned by Sandra and indeed on more than one occasion during interviews she has spoken about Babajaan bringing out the goddess in every woman, which of course makes us ask, just how does Babajaan do this?  Sandra's answer is clear and to the point "Our pieces are designed to enhance women’s natural beauty, this is the message, we celebrate women!" but in her view is there a goddess in every woman "For sure, we women have such a power, such a beautiful energy; we are mothers, wives, girlfriends, business women, leaders...

Babajaan Sofia Dress (oyster)

When we ask Sandra to define Babajaan and Sandra Moleirinho she replies:

"Babajaan is comfortable and elegant, and Sandra is a small piece of Brazil."  A great combination in our opinion, and we ask Sandra to choose the pieces in the collection which she believes represent Babajaan and Sandra best respectively and interestingly her replies are very similar: "I would say the Jackie and the Liza bikini and all Helens kaftans that are all part of our continuity line, represent Babajaan the best and for myself, despite the fact that I am inspired by women and I design for all of them, for myself I love the Helen shapes and the Jackie bikinis.."

Babajaan Jackie Bikini

So what kind of a designer is Sandra Moleirinho?  She describes herself as a disciplined designer, but not necessarily methodical (i.e. someone who is content to sit at their desk and sketch away), she needs her "moments alone for creation and this can be anywhere" and Sandra was kind enough to share one of her personal images  "one of my moments of inspiration in December 2011, in a empty beach in Angra dos Reis....even in a cloudy day Angra dos Reis is so beautiful!"

Moments of inspiration for Sandra Moleirinho in December 2011, in a empty beach in Angra dos Reis

A major fan of Coco Chanel whom she relates to because "she made a difference and left her mark in the fashion world, she was a real woman from a real world and that brought luxury into luxury", Sandra also loves Azzedine Alaia "his shapes are amazing, his designs, everything, a man that can read women's sensuality and femininity in a perfect way".

As the luxury market is seeing a major upturn with many of the luxury brands posting phenomenal sales results for this fiscal year’s third quarter there is a desire for expansion and consolidation for many brands including Babajaan who will in the future see interesting collaborations and an expansion of the collection into new product lines.

As far as long term plans for Babajaan Sandra aims to "enjoy all the results of our efforts, have a happy team, our own Babajaan stores and the children project spread around the world!"

VALEXTRA - ITALY'S HIDDEN TREASURE, CELEBRATES ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A STUNNING COLLECTION!

The Entrance to the Valextra Showroom (Milan Fashion Week) where the Lotus Flower Inspiration is immediately apparent through the exquisite designs of the collection as well as the stands designed specifically for Valextra.

The Green Pebbles Girls were lucky enough to be invited to preview the  2012-2013 Autumn Winter Collection inspired by the Lotus flower at  VALEXTRA's stunning showroom just above their flagship store in  Via Manzoni 3 in the centre of  Milan (just around the corner from Via Montenapoleone).

Valextra Clay & Teal (Tea Leaf) Héritage Bags (A/W 2012-2013 Collection)

One of the things which immediately struck us was the passion with which VALEXTRA's employees spoke about the brand and its products.

It is clear that this is a company whose products are  not only the fine workmanship of VALEXTRA's artisans  (VALEXTRA's new ownders have invested extensively in training new artisans by re-employing retired Valextra artisans to help train a new younger generation of artisans thus ensuring the skills and knowledge passed down from one generation to the next are not lost forever!), but also the result of real passion and dedication for a brand which represents classic style, elegance, luxury, innovation and above all class!

Images via Valextra

The company's exquisite designs which retain a classic elegance whilst being incredibly modern, the luxurious leathers, the craftsmanship of their artisans who hand-stitch every single bag, their obsessive attention to detail and technologically advanced solutions for clasps, handles etc and a keen need to make their products as practical and functional as possible puts VALEXTRA at the forefront of the world's luxury leather goods.

Inside Valextra's Showroom in Milan (Milan Fashion Week)

Recognised by many experts as Italy's equivalent of Hermés, after the death of its founder Giuseppe Fontana VALEXTRA had lost its way and had to wait for 2000 to be 'restored' to its former glory by Architect Emanuele Carminati Molina who bought the brand as an act of love because as a young child growing up in Milan he used to admire the products in the stores windows.

'75 Bag Valextra Autumn Winter 2012/13 Collection (Teal)

True to its tradition of being a brand dedicated to design and class, VALEXTRA goes against the trend of having 'loud' and über visible logos.  Its logo is discrete, embossed on the inside leather  or the back of the bag or tastefully engraved on its hardware.

You call tell it is a Valextra bag simply by looking at its clean and elegant lines!

Testament to Valextra's association with innovation, tradition, class and elegance have been its latest high profile collaborations with Jaeger LeCoultre and Holmes & Yang.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso

Valextra for Holmes & Yang V5C86

As one discovers each of the items of the latest collection, which coincides with VALEXTRA's 75th Anniversary, one finds that great thought and study has gone into every single little detail of the bag and accessories.  It is not just about looking fabulous, it is also about being practical, functional and making life easier - classic yet incredibly modern and forward thinking.

INSIDE MOYNAT ON 348 Rue Saint Honoré - 75001 Paris

The Green Pebbles Girls were already fans of MOYNAT, but this beautiful report inside Moynat's exclusive boutique on 348 Saint Honoré in Paris by French LE POINT has cemented our love for this stunning brand.

In the film Guillaume Davin, Moynat's President, shares his passion for the exquisite design of the bags and for the incredible rounded trunk shapes, designed to fit around the curves of the first automobiles, which he described as "more like cabinetry than leatherwork." and of course the history of this Maison which, not unlike Sleeping Beauty, has been awoken from its deep sleep.

If you weren't already in love with Moynat you will be after watching this video.

Sit back and enjoy a story about passion and craftsmanship from a brand whose mantra in its own president's opinion (and ours) should be 'High quality and beautiful products'

In the words of Moynat's Designer Ramesh Nair: "Quality is all about intimacy and craftsmanship. What you can achieve with your hands is totally different to what you can achieve with a machine. Each of our products is made by a particular person. There is an emotion attached to the product."

A TOUCH OF 'GLASS' FROM SWEDEN!

Katarina Thorstensson is making a well-deserved name for herself, after studying Fine Arts at the Design Institute of San Diego, California. She is now based in Båstad, Sweden, where she makes her beautiful hand made glass jewellery.

The uniqueness of her collection derives from her choice to adopt the technique of lampworking, in favour of the use of moulds, to create her jewellery.

Some glass jewellery, although charming, when worn can make one feel like an ornamental display cabinet. Katarina, however, manages to fuse this charm with an added touch of elegance.

Her collection is predominantly made with clear glass making it really versatile; it can truly be worn with any outfit and adapted for any occasion.

Glass has a timeless quality that means it can withstand passing trends and Katarina’s pieces are no exception to this rule. Her jewellery shows off her fine artistry as she creates modern classics, or better still, staple accessories.

If you are unable to get to one of the Swedish boutiques (listed on her website) that stock her jewellery, then you’ll be happy to know that all of Katarina’s pieces can be ordered online at www.katarinathorstensson.se or www.freshflames.com.

All the jewellery arrives gift-wrapped and if you have something particular in mind then custom pieces can be made to order.

MAGICAL H(E)ART

Gothic and Baroque dreams of two young Bolognese talents reinterpreted in imaginative prints and exquisite tailoring.

A/W 2010 - Man, left; The Elegant Universe - Man, A/W 2012-13, right

“ Baroque is ever present in Leitmotiv . Not a single collection of ours can go without it – it’s the idea of the work of art, from furniture to clothing, to dance ... every single thing was a work of art,” Fabio Sasso.

Clothes that become canvases (or, better else, projection screens) opened to fantasy worlds, neo-Baroque, neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance. Real condensed history of the image: the fantastic worlds of Bosch played out in digital “low-tech”. A look that’s unique and instantly recognisable!

AMA-ZONAS, S/S 2012

Behind Leitmotiv are Fabio Sasso and Juan Caro, two experts in art and art history, who presented their first collection in their own studio-flat in Bologna in 2006, and since then have created 6 imaginative collections of uncompromised elegance, supported and promoted by such fashion authorities as the  Milan Chamber of Fashion , Vogue Italy and the talent-scouting award Who’s On Next .

Juan Caro and Fabio Sasso

The creations of Fabio Sasso and Juan Caro are for those who take their imagination very seriously:  Leitmotiv   is always distinguished by a thorough approach to fabrics, never cheap, and with close attention to tailoring “Fabio is a real tailor, a pure craftsman!” – tells me one of their devoted followers, a contemporary art gallerist from Bologna.

Light Motiv – Woman, A/W 2011

The clothes at first sight have a strong visual impact for the choice of patterns and subjects (precisely the leitmotifs), optically mesmerising, with peculiar yet perfectly executed cut. Their most recent collection is A/W 2012-13 The Elegant Universe (L’Universo Elegante) – Man and Woman, inspired handbags and fabulous shoes: every piece, true to the designers’ acclaimed style, evokes complex, fairytale and surreal sceneries.

The Elegant Universe – Man, A/W 2012-13

The number of garments Leitmotif put on the market is limited ( indeed for some items it’s no more than 30), this allows them to be able to supervise every detail personally. They are the elitists of creative fashion, if you wish.

Over the past 3 years, however, they have successful teamed up with FURLA (as part of the Furla Talent Hub) to create a  series of stunning capsule collections of handbags and accessories: S/S 2012 inspired by the mystical motifs of the Tarot; the romantics and surrealism of The Little Prince for S/S 2011; and the magical journeys of Wizard of Oz in A/W 2010.

LEITMOTIV for FURLA  2012, left; and 2010, right

A Leitmotiv Woman is always very feminine, yet not afraid of making the creative statement of her dreams and visions. I would especially highlight the boldness, originality and colours of the S/S 2012  Ama-Zonas, inspired by the designers’ voyages, both real and imaginary:

AMA-ZONAS – Woman, S/S 2012)

Their S/S 2012 Man is a searcher of new adventures, a lover of nature and its intense colours. Romantic and pensive, yet, unlike with many other designers, still managing to retain a bold masculine appeal.
